Thinking Out Loud
Ya social media appears to be taking over the children in today's society, but is it really ? And if it is, is it such a terrible thing? As teachers, the saying "if we can't beat them, why not join them" may come into use when teaching students that are fresh to the 21st century. These children are being born into a society that's being succumbed to technology and social media, so much that it becomes an extension of their physical self. It becomes another fluent language for the upcoming digital natives. As teachers we should provide options for students to "speak" this language that is innate to them, and also adapt these technological ways into our classrooms and lessons. With bringing something new into a classroom, a teacher must educate themselves about the types of social media out there, what can be done on each of them, become aware of the problem areas that their students may encounter, help guide the students to using these types of medias in a positive way and learn how to distinguish good resources from bad ones.
I would personally try some way to incorporate social media into my classroom, but I will not go overboard on this. Students still need to learn how to manage without these "essentials" and be taught how to get the best out of both the offline and online worlds. I know my students will be more knowledgeable than me if I were to incorporate this type of media into my class, but it is probably a great way to make the less exciting components of the physical education curriculum more interesting, and it opens the doors to so many more learning experiences that a couple handouts would never be able to provide. With having more doors open to my students, it means that I need to make sure my students are knowledgeable about choosing the correct doors.
In the video under the Teacher+Learning tab, the ending of it makes sense. That teaching should not necessary go from no technology to all technology in the classroom, but its about finding a middle point where both can be intertwined so that students' learning is enhanced in order to reach their full potential.
To end, here is a comic that relates to what is happening in a lot of homes and possibly within some classrooms. :)
