What is Social Media?
Social media is defined as "an aspect of the internet which allows individuals and groups to create and publish online content, share the content and interact about it" (Lusk, 2010, p.3)
Types of Social Media include:
"Youth participate in social media in the contexts of two primary 'genres': friendship-driven and internet-driven". (Lusk, 2010, p.4)
Social Networking sites are being used by 73% of online teens and this shows how integrated social media has become in the lives of today's youth as a means of communicating with friends and the outside world. (Lusk, 2010)
Types of Social Media include:
- Social Networking Sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Myspace
- Blog sites such as Blogspot, Wordpress, Xanga
- Video Sites such as YouTube
- Gaming Sites or Virtual Worlds such as World of Warcraft, Club Penguin, Second Life and Sims
